Based on the spy shots we’ve been getting since the reveal of the Golf 8 and the Golf 8 GTI, we now have an idea of what the halo Golf will look like. Sketched up by the talented Kleber Silva, it’s a pretty close rendering effort of what the range topping hatchback might look like.
We know that the R is by intent and nature a four wheel drive performance variant of the popular moniker, using the brand 4 Motion haldex system to send power to all 4 wheels. Powered by a 2.0 Turbocharged in-line 4 cylinder petrol engine, it should easily produce over 230kW (up from 221kW) and well over 400N.m of torque (up from 380N.m), using 7-Speed DSG transmission. This new model should break it’s predecessor’s claimed 4.9 seconds from standstill to 100km/h and at-least match the top speed of 250km.
Aesthetically it will definitely keep the quad exhaust setup, blue painted callipers, unique to R side skirtings and bumper treatment and the new R badge. Overall a more aggressive look to distinguish from the GTI range yet more toned down than the likes of Civic Type-R.
Expect the price to be close to R900 000 at launch sometime in 2021.
